JBO Student Encounter
With our JBO Student Encounter program, funded by a generous grant from The Carpenter Foundation, enriches the lives of students and provides an opportunity for our musicians to share their enthusiasm for Baroque music. Each season, JBO will collaborate with two schools, giving students the opportunity to learn about and perform Baroque music.
GPHS music students to perform with JBO musicians on Oct. 3 concert

GPHS Chamber Orchestra students practicing using Baroque bows
The first students to participate in the JBO Student Encounter are string players from Grants Pass High School’s Chamber Orchestra, directed by Krista Debolt. Last year, with the help of a grant from the Josephine County Youth Foundation (JCYF) and the assistance of Holst Violins, the GPHS Orchestra Department purchased a set of Baroque-style bows. “There is no substitute for personally having the experience of this type of bow,” said Krista DeBolt.
JBO violinists Juliet Long, Abigail Wilensky, and Nancie Shaw, and JBO Music Director Abigail Mace are working with the GPHS Chamber Orchestra, preparing the scores, making artistic decisions together, and coaching the students on historical performance and the use of the Baroque bows.
This first outreach experience will culminate in a performance of the first three movements of Handel’s Concerto Grosso in E Minor, when the students will perform alongside JBO musicians in the JBO concert at the Grants Pass Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 3. Venue details.
