Fall 2010: Georg Philipp Telemann: The Hamburg Years Michael Sand, Guest Director & Baroque Violin Orchestral Suite Hamburger Ebb und Fluht (Water Music) Concerto in B-flat for 3 violins, 3 oboes and b.c. Jauchzet dem Herrn, Cantata for bass, trumpet, strings & b.c. These three works all date from Telemann's years as music director for the city of Hamburg, a period when he was considered Germany's greatest composer. The colorful and atmospheric Water Music, with its evocation of playful sea gods, blustery winds, storms and lively sailors, was commissioned by Hamburg's Admiralty -- Hamburg was a naval power -- for its annual celebration, while the festive cantata was composed for use in Hamburg's five Lutheran churches. Michael Sand, founding member of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Portland Baroque Orchestra and Arcangeli Strings, is one of the west coast's foremost baroque violinists and teachers, and we are delighted to welcome him back. Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 8 p.m. Newman Methodist Church, 6th and B Streets, Grants Pass (Map) Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 3 p.m. Unitarian Fellowship, 87 4th St., Ashland (Map) |

Winter 2010: Beloved Teacher, Star Pupil Wilhelm Friedrich Zachow (1663-1712) George Frederick Handel (1685-1759) Directed by Margret Gries, Harpsichord Zachow: Christmas Cantata Vom Himmel kam der Engel Schar SATB soli and chorus, 4 trumpets, timpani, bassoon & strings Handel: Messiah, Christmas portion Zachow, organist at Halle's Marienkirche, was Handel's first and much-beloved teacher of organ, harpsichord, violin and composition. The student's esteem and gratitude were so great that when Zachow died Handel supported the widow for the rest of her life. His cantata From Heaven Came a Host of Angels is a festive work for Christmas and it is very likely that the young Handel was one of its original performers. Saturday, Dec. 4th, 8pm, Newman United Methodist Church, Grants Pass Sunday, Dec. 5th, 3pm, Unitarian Fellowship, Ashland |

Spring 2011: Johann Sebastian Bach Directed by Margret Gries, Harpsichord Ascension Oratorio BWV 11, Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen SATB soli & chorus, 3 trumpets & timpani, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, strings & b.c. Cantata BWV 51, Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen soprano, trumpet, strings & b.c. Southern Oregon Repertory Singers' programming of Bach's monumental B-minor Mass for May 13th & 15th (with a world-class period instrument band including both JBO's first music director Rob Diggins as concert master and our present music director Margret Gries, violin) has inspired us to offer two complementary concerts of the master's smaller works. Both Cantatas 11, Praise God in his Firmament, and 51, Praise God in All Lands, are brilliant and festive utterances of Bach's Christian faith. (And, by the way, lovers of Bach's music will want to see the listing of Showcase Concerts to learn about Margret Gries' recital of Bach harpsichord and organ works.) Saturday, May 7th, 8pm, Newman United Methodist Church, Grants Pass Sunday, May 8th, 3pm, Unitarian Fellowship, Ashland |
