Spring Showcase Concert
Music from Samuel Pepys Diaries
Margret Gries, harpsichord & director
Since the early 20th c. transcriptions of Pepys' ten years of diaries, they have become historians' best source for many aspects of Restoration society, e.g. theater, music, naval history, the plague of 1665, and the great London fire of 1666. Our program is based on music from Pepys' own collection, and includes consorts by Matthew Locke, duos from "The Pleasant Companion" and ballads about life in London. When Pepys made music, either alone or with others, he gave us titles and instrumentation so that we know what he played and with whom. There is so much available music that we'll only hit the high points, interspersed with relevant readings from Pepys' journals.
Sunday, April 28, 2013, at 3pm, First Congregational Church (UCC), 817 Siskiyou Boulevard, Ashland
